For nine decades the ABC, Australia’s national broadcaster, has told the Australian story through a myriad of platforms and media. The Royal Australian Mint joins in celebrating the 90th anniversary of the ABC with this striking commemorative coin design available as both as 2022 $1 Fine Silver Proof Coin and 2022 20c Uncirculated Coin.
The Australian Broadcasting Commission (ABC) was officially launched on 1 July 1932 and has since become a much loved touchstone of Australia’s social and cultural fabric. Starting as a single radio service, ‘Aunty’ has grown into a multi-platform media operation and a public broadcaster of international renown. The ABC Charter, set down by Parliament, requires the ABC to provide informative, entertaining and educational services that reflect the breadth of our nation.
Over the decades, the ABC has created some of the most iconic Australian content and truly became the voice of the nation. Everything from Play School and Bluey, and This Day Tonight, to Count Down and Triple J Top 100, the ABC has always innovated, commentated and reflected what it is to be Australian.
As a fellow teller of Australian stories, the Royal Australian Mint is proud to help the ABC celebrate 90 years. Happy Birthday Aunty!
Struck by Royal Australian Mint from 1/2oz of 99.9% pure silver, the coin is issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965 and has a mintage of 5,000.
Design:
The reverse of each coin features the iconic ABC lissajous logo surrounded by more than forty characters, titles and pictograms symbolising the diverse and expansive facets of Australia’s national broadcaster. The inscription “90 YEARS OF THE AUSTRALIAN BROADCASTING CORPORATION” is present around the coin.
The obverse of each coin features the effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II designed by Jody Clark as well as the monetary denomination and 2022 year-date.
Presentation:
Each coin is presented in a capsule in a ABC themed presentation box and is accompanied by a numbered certificate of authenticity.
